Wildcard Indexes in MongoDB 4.2 (MongoDB World 2019 Keynote, part 3)

June 27, 2019
CTO Eliot Horowitz introduces Wildcard Indexes, followed by a demonstration by Principle Product Manager Asya Kamsky. One of the document model's greatest strengths is its ability to easily model rich heterogenous data, wherein records share some fields, but have high variability across others. Inventory items in a product catalogue will all have a title and price, for example, but a digital camera will have a megapixels attribute, while a pair of sneakers will have size and color. Until now, developers have had to compromise between the need to index these records by their attributes, and the desire to model them in the most natural way. Wildcard Indexes, new in MongoDB 4.2, allow developers to simply declare indexes on an entire keypath in a document, letting them model these records exactly the way that is most natural without compromising on the needs to index all of the attributes. https://www.mongodb.com/new
